We just got back from an epic trip with our friend Capt. Scott Stanko of Tailing Red Anglers. Scott is a long time friend and colleague of mine in the guiding industry. After years of sending me pictures of giant Redfish each fall, I finally put a trip together for this year. I brought down two of my best and most fun clients with me – Gina Kelly and Keith Withycombe.
We had some days of cloudy, windier weather which made for some tougher fishing, but also got lucky with sunny and calm conditions. In the trout world, you want cloudier weather, as it makes trout feel more comfortable feeding higher up in the water column. You’re also mostly blind fishing for trout as you don’t need to see the fish itself, casting to structure and current seams.
In the saltwater world you need to see the fish to have a realistic chance to catch them on a fly, so sunny and calm conditions are best. When we got these, we had lots of shots at redfish in the shallows, and caught a bunch of fish! It was so fun for me to target a new species on a fly rod. We even experienced an all out feeding frenzy of Jack Crevalles and Bull Redfish in open water. I can honestly say it was one of the most insane fishing experiences of my entire life. We can’t wait for next year! Enjoy these pictures from our trip and get in touch if you’re interested in hosted trips like this.
