The Missouri River is the culmination of many of the most famous trout waters in Montana. The Madison, Jefferson, and Gallatin rivers converge near Three Forks, Montana to form this behemoth of a watershed. A little ways downstream is where the part of the Missouri we focus on comes out from beneath Holter Dam. This cold water is a super ecosystem of aquatic insects, and thousands of trout lie in wait to feed on the river’s massive bug life.
The small fishing town of Craig, MT is where the action happens. Three fly shops, a restaurant, and a bar is all this place consists of, but there’s a whole lot of trout.
Every year during the month of May, Montana Guiding Company heads to the Missouri River and the trout town of Craig. While our local freestone waters near Missoula are blown out with Spring runoff, the Missouri’s flows are stable and it’s fish hungry.
The river is mostly a nymph fishery this time of year, but it’s common to hook 40 plus trout a day, with the average size being above 17 inches. Numerous fish in the 19-21” range are landed daily by our Missouri River Fly Fishing Guides.
If you’re looking to fish one of the best tailwaters in the west this spring, let us show you around the Missouri River and its big trout, you won’t be disappointed.
