River Profile: The Missouri River Fly Fishing

In this 5-part series we will share our knowledge and insights on the five rivers we fish in Montana

The Missouri River is simply one of the best and most productive trout rivers in North America. A tailwater river flowing out from underneath Holter Dam; its cold, consistent flows make the perfect habitat for trout to grow all year long. It boasts one of the best trout-per-mile stats found anywhere, at over 7500 fish per mile. Not only are there a lot of fish, but they are big. An average Missouri rainbow pushes 17-18 inches of solid muscle, with many fish hitting and surpassing the 20”-21” range.

Although statistically the majority of the Missouri River’s trout population is made up of rainbows, there is a significant brown trout population as well. These browns have gotten more prolific in numbers and larger in size in the past years, and they specifically appear when the dry flies are out. It’s not uncommon to have a chance to cast to a rising brown trout pushing 23 or 24 inches here when the pmd’s are hatching in June. Just don’t screw it up, as these big boys usually only give you one shot at them.

We spend most of our time on the Missouri in the month of May, as our home water in western Montana is blown out with mountain runoff during that time. This is a phenomenal time to be on the “Mo”, as the meadows and valleys of the rocky mountain front are lush verde with Spring’s emergence. In addition to the great scenery, it’s arguably one of the most productive fishing time periods as well, as the emergence of spring mayflies and freshwater crustaceans makes the nymph fishing something to be experienced for every angler.

We do also make short trips over to the Mo in other times like the pmd hatch in June, hoppers in August, and baetis of October. It’s a phenomenal tailwater resource for us to have nearby only a short 2 hour drive from Missoula. Once in a while, we do run day trips from Missoula there and back, but for the most part we try to make multi-day runs over here. There are great lodging options in Helena (45 mins from the water), or closer lodging options in the small towns of Craig or Cascade.

The Missouri is one the great trout rivers in America, and it has to be on any avid fly fisher’s list of, “must-fish” rivers.

If you haven’t fished the Missouri River yet, be sure to request a day here on your next trip.

Don’t forget to buy a fishing license!
