What city in Montana has the best fly fishing?

he state of Montana is considered by many to be the best state for fly fishing in the lower 48, and some would even say it’s one of the absolute best places in the world. We’re a little biased, of course, but once you see how many places there are to fish in this state, it’s hard to imagine a better place.

The tough part is choosing where in Montana to fish. The state is massive (it takes over 9 hours to drive across it at 80 mph) and the rivers, creeks, and streams are endless.

There’s great fishing on the famous tailwaters of the Missouri and Bighorn, as well as the world famous Greater Yellowstone Region which includes the Madison, Jefferson, Yellowstone, and more. But if I were to choose one place in Montana to headquarter my fly fishing trip around, it would undoubtedly be Missoula.

The thing that sets Missoula Montana Fly Fishing apart is having the amount of options in terms of scenery, fish size, dry flies, and solitude. If you stay in downtown Missoula, your Missoula Montana Fly Fishing Guide can bring you to over 300 miles of floatable water within a one hour drive of your stay. To have this level of versatility and options is not only unmatched in Montana, but unmatched in most places around the world.

Your Missoula Montana Fly Fishing Guide can bring you south to the Bitterroot River for big brown trout on stoneflies, west for rising rainbows on the lower Clark Fork River, or north to the scenic upper canyon of the Blackfoot River, and a hundred places in between.

Western Montana and the Missoula area also has the longest dry fly season of anywhere in the west. We fish dry flies primarily here for an 8 month span. March 15th is usually the start of the Skwala hatch, and we finish the year with blue wing olives well into late October.

If you haven’t seen all of what a Missoula Montana Fly Fishing Trip has to offer, let us show you this year. It might just become an annual trip to the fly fishing headquarters of the US.

We’ll see you on the water,

Trevor Anderson
