There are thousands of miles of trout streams, creeks, and rivers to fish in Montana. It has earned its reputation as the fly fishing capital of the world for good reason. But where exactly in Montana is the best place to spend your Montana Fly Fishing Trip? We may be biased, but Missoula Montana has the best fly fishing in Montana.
First off, it has the longest season. No where else in the state has great dry fly fishing starting in mid March and going until the end of October. Actually, there might not be another place in the entire west that has that kind of season.
But the number one reason to base your trip out of Missoula is the options and variety it provides in any direction, all within a short drive. Within one hour of driving from downtown Missoula there are endless fishing options. You can fish Skwalas for big brown trout on the middle Bitterroot, throw salmonflies to big cutthroats tight to the willows on the Upper Blackfoot and Rock Creek, or cast mayflies to rising rainbows on the Lower Clark Fork. You can even be to the world famous Missouri River in less than 2 hours (although we tend to stay over there for multiple days). There is over 300 miles of fishable water within an hour’s drive from Missoula, a trout fisherman’s paradise. Many of Montana Guiding Company clients stay in one of the great hotels or vacation rentals in downtown Missoula, and we take them to a different river every day of their three or four day trip. This allows a great variety of scenery and fishing.
So next time you’re deciding where to go for your fly fishing trip, consider Missoula if you haven’t before. We don’t think you’ll be disappointed. See you on the water.
